Yeah - I saw those Moldin Oldies fairing replacements a while back. Pricy, and they add weight. I probably going to have to bite it, and just replace these fairings. I did buy the recent Estes replacement fits - that might help.

They'll definitely add weight if they are solid urethane... which means you probably ought to add nose weight. I asked Estes a while back if you could get the vacu-form sheets but they don't have any lying around apparently.

The discussion about vacu-form awoke a latent memory so I Googled it and found this video.

I kind of remember a slogan "It's more fun to play the vacu-form way."
No wait, that was Colorforms.
Could what you need be made if you had access to a real vacu-form machine?

I sent an email in to Estes customer service asking if one might be able to buy the vacuform parts separately (and more capsules... those things always break) I wonder if there is some lightweight goopy stuff you could put into the engine fairings to make them more "resilient" w/o adding too much weight... Like styrofoam or something

Estes's response:

Good Morning John!

We have not (yet) received the item#1969 Saturn V rockets in inventory. However, it is my understanding that they will have spare parts for sale. Please continue to check our website for availability as well as your welcome to email or call to inquire if I have heard of an update on arrival for parts.

So I'd say you could get the vac sheets, Todd, and replace those torn fairings.

Thanks John.

I didn't state very clearly that I had extra fairings, fins and decals, ordered from Estes (Christine - RIP) from back when. As well, I order a set of fins from the last run, which are molded plastic instead of vacuform.

I guess I also didn't make clear that I'm looking for an easy out :-), that I'd rather not replace and paint those fairings, but I'm realizing that I have no real choice. I guess there's no easy way out (sing that like Roger Daltry).
