I have an older (about 10 years) Dell Dimension 4500 workstation that I no longer use and want to get rid of. A while back I turned it into a Linux server and just updated it to the latest version of Ubuntu Linux. It would make a good file or music server or just something to muck around on. It works great with Linux but you could easily throw a copy of Windows back on it. I could probably dig out the original disks.

Specs:
OS - Umbuntu Linux 12.04 LTS
1 GB memory
Intel Pentium 4 - 2.53 GHz
40 GB Hard Drive

Howard,

I'll take it. My son needs something like this. Will you be at the next launch?

Terrific! Sold to Daniel for his son. Yes, my plan is to be at the Acton launch and I'll bring it then. Do you want me to try and dig out the original Windows XP disks or do you want to stick with the latest version of Linux?

I suggest staying with Linux. It runs a lot faster than Windows on older PCs.

Windows XP will no longer be supported by Microsoft after April 8, 2014, meaning an end to Windows security updates. A PC of that age and specs will not effectively support Windows 7 or 8.

I agree - it certainly has all the features anyone needs of a basic computer: Ubuntu tour
