The least favorite part of rocketry is searching for lost rockets. Check out this link about the tileMate tracking device. www.thetileapp.com/
Someone I work with has one on his keychain and we tested it out around the office and it works great.

Frank, I found your white 2.6in x 4ft rocket with stickers and cool forward canted fins at Berwick after you left. It was laying in a dip in the field, well beyond the large area of brush south east of the launchpads. Gave it to Ken to hold with CMASS stuff.

When my son and I started launching with CMASS 10 years ago, you were the first to greet us and offer assistance.
Thank you

The tileMate uses Bluetooth for communication, claiming 100ft maximum range.
This may work for items lost around the house, or if you are lucky enough for someone else to walk within range with a smartphone who is also running the tileMate app.
However, 100ft range is not good for rocket recovery.

AMW sells a couple trackers that can work for very long range:
1) The transmitter requires a receiver to track rocket down, and has a range of thousands of feet.
2) The cell based device can be texted and will respond with GPS coordinates. Required local cell signal, but no special receiver.

What you are saying makes sense. When I think about it 100 feet is not very far. What made me think the tileMate would be helpful is if I knew the general location of a rocket that was in tall grass or high brush. Good import, thanks for your reply.

Another option is a small GPS tracking device like the Trackimo . They use a cellular service and will let you see the location on your rocket on a cell phone app. Giant Leap Rocketry has a good review of it. While they are definitely more expensive than the Tile, they will be a lot more effective tracking a lost rocket.
