NORG - 2019 Event Announcement! was created by Niteowl67
ANNOUNCEMENT: For those of you following along last year, at the end of the 2018 Season we set a goal of an expanded 2019 Launch Schedule to make up for lost events (due to Softball & weather) and also to celebrate the 50th Moon Landing! In late February we made a request for Six (6) Event Dates with one scheduled for July 20th! A few weeks later we learned that our Home Field, The Gallows Hill Park, would be shut down for renovations starting July 1st!

Fortunately, we were able to work with the City of Salem's Park & Recreation Department to obtain two dates before the park goes "off line". As of April 16, 2019, the Nite Owl Rocketry Gild (NAR Section #799) obtained approval for 1st Sundays in May and June (with NO RAIN DATES!). They are May 5th (5:45 to 9:15 PM) and June 2nd (6:15 to 9:45 PM). As before, the 90 minutes after sunset will allow 1 hour of night launch activities and half hour for tear down. Differently, we will begin 2 hours before sunset so as to allow 90 minutes for day launch activities and a 1/2 hour for set up! Please arrive early to help out!

Soon NORG will receive our Park Permit via e-mail. We are still in the process of obtaining the needed Fire Permit and will make announcement on success in the near future. We look forward to some fun Model Rocketry Sport Launch Events featuring night launch or "nite flite" activities at The Gallows Hill Park in Salem, MA this Spring of 2019. Please see the NORG website for details as these dates quickly approach for field information, what to bring/know, and weather decisions.

INVITATION: NORG officially invites CMASS Members (and others) to participate in our 2019 Launch Schedule on the two dates & times mentioned above! Also, later this year, a Special Joint Launch at CMASS' Amesbury, MA Field on Nov. 16th at Sunset.

NORG - 2019 Events 2nd Announcement!

ANNOUNCEMENT: As of April 23, 2019 NORG was granted it's Fire Permit for the 2019 Season at the Gallows Hill Park in Salem, MA after receiving it's Park Permit via e-mail on April 17th! Once again those dates and times are: 1st Sundays in May and June (with NO RAIN DATES!) on May 5th (5:45 to 9:15 PM) and June 2nd (6:15 to 9:45 PM). SPECIAL NOTE: While obtaining the Fire Permit the City's Fire Marshal advised me that an adjacent field (Mansell Park East of Gallows Hill) was fenced off due to soil contamination discovered last year. Further, I was advised to examine it. I did and prevailing wind patterns do not blow in that direction (west side of Gallows Park is sheltered by woods, hill leading to water tower, and Water Tower itself).

THINGS TO KNOW/BRING: Another group will be using the field prior to NORG's Events for both dates. The Park Permit has a buffer period for both dates to allow the group to leave field and parking lot before we start. If there is any confusion during early arrival then the rally point is the chain link fence at the entrance of the field and edge of the parking lot. Look for NORG sign!

ABOUT THE FIELD: The field is a small venue (D Engines or smaller) in the historic Gallows Hill Park in Salem, MA and is located right off Mansell Parkway near Highland Avenue (Rte. 107) and Boston Street (MAP may be found in Past NORG website BLOG post). Look for the water tower as the dominate landmark. There is free parking (no lined spaces in lot) adjacent to the field. However, until we establish a routine size of participants try to car pool when you can and don't count on all those spaces (30 cars) being available. Be kind to the neighborhood!

ROCKETRY ETIQUETTE: This is all considered "Class 1" rocketry (NO FAA waiver needed). While it shouldn't be a problem, pay attention to aircraft to note it's direction/altitude and pause activities accordingly. Bring your love of rocketry and a bird whose characteristics are well known to you, your listening skills (best rocketry etiquette), and your own launch pad and controller (British rules -- you may be sharing them). This is a more intimate or smaller setting (perhaps 30 people -- perhaps 1/2 including spectators) and you will be allowed to conduct your own countdown to launch (a great opportunity for kids). There will be no P.A. system but there will be an orientation on safety and range etiquette (during set-up!); so come early! Know your bird's vital stats (or bring an index card) for safety check. This is especially important if you are participating in night flight activities. Your model must have some sort of electronic illumination source for "nite flite". Bring a small flashlight (for working on model) and a LED safety light (or glow stick) to be visible on the field for safety. Minors 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those under 13 must have adult supervision to launch their models. Have fun!

MISC.: This field is not known for mosquitos but bug spray is always prudent to have at dusk. An extra can of repellent will be kept at the safety station for those who forget. There are NO PUBLIC REST ROOMS at the park. You must prevail yourself upon local merchants/stores.

WEATHER DECISIONS: Remember there are NO RAIN DATES. You will find a weather decision posted 3 days before the event.

NORG - 2 Week Reminder, 2nd Event June 2nd!

ANNOUNCEMENT: The 2nd NORG Event for 2019 is two weeks away on June 2nd (Sunday - 6:15 to 9:45 PM) weather permitting! As before there is NO RAIN DATE!

ABOUT LAST WEATHER DECISION: For those of you on the North Shore you probably noticed it didn't rain on May 5th (1st NORG Event) in our area. Rain happened South of the Mass Pike that Sunday. I made the weather decision based on reliable reports 3 days before on Thursday morning. Later that afternoon, WBZ Channel 4's chief meteorologist gave 1st indication Sunday would not be a "washout". The other 3 stations (5, 7, & NECN) disagreed! As late as Saturday AM, WBZ's weekend meteorologist still called for a rainy Sunday. However, NECN later that afternoon said there was a "wobbly low" hard to predict if it would stay South or not. The rest is history. In the future I will always try to get a rain date for events but that was not an option due to planned Gallows Hill Park's closure for renovations July 1st!

CLUB BUSINESS: Membership ($5) and field use fees ($1 - members & $2 - nonmembers) will be suspended. Donations for field use are welcome to defray the cost of the Fire Permit ($50). I hope participants will chose to sign the membership list but I expect all to sign the launch list so I get some reliable numbers for participation and # of flights. For interested spectators, there will be some spare RTG (ready to go) kits for those who wish to FLY them (as engines and wadding last)! At some point we need to hold elections for club officers and I hope to do a "Field Vote" this November at the Joint Launch with CMASS. If you recall that was canceled last year due to very bad field conditions!

JOINT LAUNCH: The 3rd and FINAL NORG Evert of 2019 will be a Joint Launch with CMASS at their Amesbury, MA field. I hope to debut my "Saturn V Nite Flite" rocket there! Keep this date ready -- November 16th a Saturday at Sunset (about 16:21) after CMASS' normal day launches. Enjoy!

2nd Event, June 2nd Weather Decision Postponed 24 Hrs.!

WEATHER INDECISION: It's official, Meteorological Science is in the Era of "interpreting the computer model" rather then reading the weather. Just too much raw data for humans! The timing of rain events for this weekend has shifted back and forth and it's an issue of when Sunday will be hit with rain. Channels 4, 5, 7, & NECN all agree there will be rain on Sunday June 2nd. All agree temps in the low 70's but in order say about the rain: "Isolated Showers"; "Risk Showers"; "Shower, N & W"; and "35%, 2nd 1/2 of day". A final decision will be made in 24 hours as to "GO!" of "No GO!".

2nd Event, NO GO June 2nd!

WEATHER DECISION: Timing of rain on Sunday June 2nd is late afternoon or early evening! Channels 4, 5, 7, & NECN say the following about the rain (in order): "Late Day Scattered Shower & Thunder Storms"; "Pop Up or Thunder Storms "; "30% Evening Shower"; and "45% Late Day Rain & Thunder Storms". All stations agree temps in low 70's but Channel 7 says 78 degrees but 60's along coast. Therefore we are a NO GO for 2nd NORG Event on Sunday June 2nd! Onward to 3rd and final NORG Event in November Joint Launch with CMASS in Amesbury, MA!
