CMASS was invited to set up a table at the American Textile History Museum's Super Saturday To Infinity And Beyond day. While it may seem a strange place for a model rocket display, they have several themed events every year with free admission and this year they had a Smithsonian traveling exhibit on space suits.Typical attendance on a Saturday is 50. These special events do better and they told us there were around 500 people in attendance. The museum people were extremely cooperative and gave us all the space we wanted. CMASS was well represented by Howard, Fred, Matt and his son (who has a future in sales!) Dan, Ed, John and Kenn. I spent most of the day sitting and looking presidential. We had the opportunity to listen to a fascinating talk by David Reed, who worked flight dynamics for the first four Apollo missions. John pointed out that he was a real "steely eyed missile man"! And they gave us pizza for lunch. We had many interested people who stopped by our tables and we gave out a bunch of free kits and CMASS brochures. Many had flown rockets at one time or another and there were some interesting stories like the woman who flew rockets at the end of her wedding reception or the guy who landed flaming wadding (he now knows why that's a bad idea) on the fire station roof.

January 5, 2013 Acton Launch

Our Winter Follies launch actually had winter like weather this year. The ground was covered with snow although it wasn't very deep. Acton did an excellent job of plowing the parking area and a volunteer (sorry, didn't catch his name) cut a path through the show ridge with a little shovel so passage to the pad area was easy. It was reasonably sunny but it was also a little windy. Turnout was a little lower than in previous years. We still had Fliskits and AMW on site to sell kits and motors. We decided that there was little chance of setting the snow on fire so we allowed sparky flights. We had 76 flights. There are pictures in the gallery (from multiple people this time!).

November 17, 2012 Amesbury Launch

We had a fine ending for our 2012 flying season. As is often the case for our last launch of the year, the winds were low and the temperature was cool but pleasant. We had around 220 flights during the day that included some interesting demo flights from Fliskits, a lot of high power flights, a couple of impressive catos and, of course, the most impressive flight of the day, the Katan Hellboy 70 (actually 69 but who's counting?). There are photos in the gallery. If you haven't added yours yet, please do. We ended the day with a night launch which included the usual array of illuminated rockets and a RC plane with lights. It was getting a little cold near the end so eight of us quickly headed for Acapulco's where the manager took pity on us and found us a table in the crowded restaurant. Thanks to all of you who volunteered to make our launches run smoothly.
06 October 2012 Joint MMMSC & CMASS Launch

We had another successful joint club launch in Berwick, Maine, on Saturday. The weather forecasts weren’t too hopeful but the conditions were very good for most of the day except for the 10+ mph wind. Even that was toward the better part of the field with very few rockets drifting off the field. There were fewer than 100 launches total but that included two Level 1 certification flights and one Level 2 flight; these three were successful. There was an attempt at a Junior Level 1 but a motor retainer failure made it just a practice flight. Boris put up a monster (his Magician, I believe, pictured here) on a K off of the new HP launch pad. The pad held rock steady and the flight was beautiful. There was even a K drag race. Bill put up a couple of hybrids and had to give one of them a Benny Hill-quality chase as the wind pulled the chute and rocket across the tabletop-flat field. At the low end, we had everything from 1/4A to G.Scott grilled up some tasty hot dogs and Robert & Gloria donated a Mosquito kit and a 2-grain, 29 mm CTI casing with closure for the raffle. Boris won both and is trying to figure out how he can cluster the Mosquito. Speaking of Boris, in addition to his K flight, he put up two of his impressive saucers and another cluster - whose name escapes me - all of which pleased the crowd gathered. The weather finally did move toward us in a threatening way so the launch was cut short and we packed up. The timing was perfect as the first drops hit just as we were entering the restaurant and had stopped by the time we finished eating. To make up for scrubbed launches for both clubs over the past month, another joint launch is planned for 13 October at MMMSClub’s Berwick field. BTW, a couple of Maine Missile Moose & Squirrel Club tee shirts were spotted at this launch. There may be more the next time.
