mike densmores cluster 20190430 2008585709      The launch, originally scheduled for Saturday, was pushed to Sunday due to high winds and possible rain, and it wasn't looking good for Sunday either. By Saturday evening there was still a chance of rain for Sunday afternoon, but the decision was made to go for it. It was decided not to serve food and set up only one high power pad, in case of a rain-induced shortened launch and need for a quick take down of the launch equipment. It actually turned out to be a pretty decent day, overcast with moderate to strong winds, but no rain and we got a full day of launching in. Late in the day a second high power pad was set up to accommodate the long line of L1 cert flights. We had 141 flights from MicroMax to I, many L1 cert flights with most being successful. One CATO that I remember and one spectacular rocket failure. An H999 Warp 9 motor flew right through the student's rocket, leaving it in pieces at the pad. I guess Elmer's glue is not a good bonding agent for high power flights!

We had a good attendance, especially considering the weather and the postponement. Most of the regulars were there plus four school groups, U. Mass Lowell, WPI, Tufts and Boston U. All of the groups except U. Mass Lowell had several L1 cert flights, which made for a busy (and sometimes exciting) day. Troop 46 from Tewksbury was also there and a group of Raytheon engineers with their own Patriot missiles (Estes not Raytheon). The Raytheon group got in several flights of their rockets with a couple of Patriot drag races. Jim Flis was there, this time as a civilian testing out a new prototype. Hopefully it will make it into the new FlisKits catalog. It was great to see him.raytheons patrioteers 20190430 1259084673

We had a lot of help setting up, taking down and assisting all of the student flights. Thanks to Kenn and Guy especially for working the whole day, and to Howard, Tony, Jim Moe, Liz, Chris, Dan, the several that I'm missing and the students who helped take down at the end of the day.
